Merchants Millpond is a state park in the eastern North Carolina coastal plain. A 60 square mile watershed encompasses the open-water pond, wetland swamps and forestland. Assessments of the pond and its four tributaries in 1980 discovered relatively high levels of excess nutrients, which correlated to swine and agricultural operations in the watershed. A constructed wetland system was installed to provide wastewater treatment for the Rangers quarters.
